Project Overview

The Gallery Experience Revamp was undertaken to transform CarDekho’s image galleries into an engaging, interactive, and conversion-driven touchpoint in the car-buying journey. With ~21% of total site traffic landing on galleries but converting at less than ~1%, it was clear that the experience wasn’t meeting user expectations. Since galleries play a pivotal role in building visual trust and confidence, the revamp aimed to deliver a seamless, interactive, and SEO-friendly solution that supports decision-making and drives higher engagement.

  • High Drop-off Despite High Traffic: 21% of traffic came to galleries but only ~1% converted.

  • Fragmented Navigation: Separate URLs for each image disrupted flow and hurt discoverability.

  • Underwhelming Interactivity: Lack of 360° views, zoom, or filters limited user engagement.

  • Slow Performance on Mobile: Image load times were poor, especially on low bandwidth connections.

  • Weak SEO & Engagement Loops: Missing features like sharing, bookmarking, and comments reduced social proof and discoverability.

  • Content Consistency: OEM vs. in-house content had quality gaps, impacting trust and aesthetics.

We began by deeply analyzing user behavior through CarDekho’s analytics (Clarity, GA) to uncover drop-offs, engagement patterns, and session depth. To empathize with users, we mapped five key personas—ranging from first-time buyers to auto enthusiasts—to understand their unique needs and frustrations.
This combination of data-driven insights and user-centric empathy helped us frame the real problems behind low engagement and weak conversions. Some of the user's pain points are mentioned below.

The step-by-step approach taken during the project, including research, planning, design, development and implementations.

Discovery & Research

  • Analyzed CarDekho’s analytics (Clarity, GA) to uncover drop-offs, engagement duration, and scroll depth.

  • Conducted a competitor benchmarking study (CarWale, Cars24, Spinny) to identify best practices like 360° views, filters, and immersive layouts.

  • Mapped user personas (first-time buyers, lifestyle buyers, family decision-makers, enthusiasts, and mobile-first users) and their pain points.

A comparative analysis using SEMrush and SimilarWeb revealed that competitors like CarWale, Cars24, and Spinny deliver significantly higher gallery engagement. Their stronger interaction patterns highlighted the performance gap and shaped our redesign strategy.

Problem Framing & Goal Alignment

  • Synthesized research into key problem statements (fragmented navigation, low engagement, slow mobile performance).

  • Defined measurable success metrics: session duration ↑30%, bounce rate ↓20%, scroll depth ↑10%, conversion ↑2x.

  • Prioritized mobile-first design as the core strategy given majority traffic source.

Ideation & Information Architecture

  • Consolidated fragmented URLs into a single dynamic gallery structure for SEO and navigation flow.

  • Designed category-based navigation (Highlights, Exterior, Interior, Colors, Features, 360°).

  • Brainstormed interactive features: zoom, filters, hotspots, bookmarking, sharing (incl. WhatsApp).

  • Created low-fidelity wireframes to validate layout, flow, and interactions.

Design & Prototyping

  • Built high-fidelity prototypes in Figma, maintaining CarDekho’s design language.

  • Introduced TripAdvisor-inspired layouts (scrollable thumbnails + large view).

  • Integrated sticky action bars for share & download.

  • Created 360° interactive car views with hotspots for feature highlights.

  • Optimized for mobile load times (lazy loading, CDN utilization).

Significant Lift in Gallery Engagement, The revamped structure drove higher CTRs, deeper exploration and longer picture-viewing sessions.

Higher user engagement on key overview elements

The revamped gallery drove strong uplift in core interactions.

  • Punch: Overview image CTR increased from 9.4% to 11.8%
  • Roxx: Overview image CTR increased from 8.2% to 11.6%
  • Slide button interactions also grew across both models, indicating smoother exploration.

Stronger discovery of content categories

Users started exploring deeper sections instead of dropping off after 1–2 images.

  • Punch: Images tab CTR grew from 0.5% to 1.6%, Colours tab from 5.2% to 6.8%
  • Roxx: Similar uplift with Images tab from 0.4% to 2.0%, Colours tab from 5.4% to 8.2%

Stable overview session duration with better interaction quality

The updated picture tab design reduced friction, leading to longer viewing sessions.

  • Punch: Picture tab session duration increased from 88s to 104s (gain of 15.5s)
  • Roxx: Increased from 84s to 95s (gain of 11.6s)

Improved relevance of top-viewed categories

Clearer structure helped users quickly navigate to the right image sets:

  • Punch exterior: Badges, looks, lights emerged as top 3 viewed categories

  • Roxx exterior: Looks, badges, and camera sensors dominated
    This indicates users were able to find the most decision-making visuals faster.
